Final Cut

First cut- feedback from class

When we showed the class our first cut we got some constructive criticism back that meant we could make changes to our film and make it better.

Some feedback we got back on our match on action was that it could be edited better so the clip runs more smoothly. So we went back and edited by making the cuts sharper.
Even though generally the voice overs were good there is one section where they are not that believable but this was hard to try and change because the lips are moving quite quickly and there are not distinctive lip movements to see what is actually being said.

We aimed to create a comedy and from everyones reaction we managed this, people seemed to laugh at the right bits and it was a light hearted comedy, so I feel we fulfilled what we wanted to achieve.

On the first cut we didn't have all the titles that we wanted and in the places we wanted, we decided to put the film title "Upstaged" at the end of the 2 minutes because it made more sense and fitted better because then people would understand why its called upstaged because of the competition with the two dancers trying to 'upstage' each other.

The music over all worked well, we had the two different types of music playing when each character came on to screen separately and then when it's the two of them we had a separate clip playing to bring them together. There was only one clip that we had to change the volume lower because we couldn't here the voice over clearly so we went back after the first showing and changed this.

Our mise-en scene (costumes) were also talked about, it was said that the costumes didn't really work because it wasn't obvious who or what our characters were.It needed both the music and costumes together.

After hearing all of this we went back and changed what we needed to and ended up with the final cut.

Animatic

Over all our animatic was good quality, the pictures were drawn by Perry so were very clear and this made it easier to understand the story.

It was easy to cut and edit and gave us a good plan to work from when we were to start filming.
However the only problem was that our animatic turned out to be around 7 minutes long when it was only meant to be 2. This was because we had so many changing shots too create the look we wanted. When it comes to filming we should make sure that we dont let it over run like this did and it doesnt get overly complicated otherwise this could ruin the way we want the film to turn out.

When we showed the class there were no real criticisms from the class just the only problem was the length. I think people understood the general story line but it would become more clear in the final film.

We have edited it down as much as possible and it still looks good.

Evaluation

This is our evaluation, we chose to do it with the four of us talking about the different points collectively to get a better evalutaion over all and get different points of view from each of us.

Editing

We had to edit our films and shots to create a smooth two minute film. We had numerous shots and lots to work with which we decided to do when filming so that we would have alternatives to chose from.

this was a fairly simple process to do and no problems really took place apart from the computer freezing.

To get the sort of 2 minute film we wanted we decided we would have short shots which moved quite quickly and therefore this meant we would have to do lots of cutting of about half an hours worth of film, this means it was long and took a lot of thought about which shots worked better together.

Voice overs- Also after watching what we had filmed we noticed that the speech was not fitting with the lip movements of the characters so we decided we should use voice overs to make it look better and create a better film. For the voice overs Perry and Sam had to sit in a quiet room so there would be minimal background sounds that would interfere. They had the scripts and new what they were saying and what had to be retouched up. They then editing what voice overs they wanted and put them on the film bar as a sound in the right place and it was sorted. There was only one voice over that could of been done better as it was slight out of time but it was very hard to try and get the timing because the speaking was quicker at this point than any other.

Sound-we used a website that gave us lots of different clips that we could use for our video. we picked two basic different clips, one for Perry which was disco dancing music to fit his character and then a latino sounding clip for Sam which also fitting his character. We have music playing throughout the whole two minutes but when we put it on the film bar we could change the volume so we made the sound quieter when we had talking and louder for dancing or other bits.
