Consumer Research

I spoke to a few people my age and what they all said were their favorite music video's that have a story line.

One that a few of them mentioned was, If I were a boy, by Beyonce.

Print Screen

Here I have decided to take some of my favourite screen prints from our production:

As Emily is our actor in this, I like the fact she looks like shes behind bars. So she feels trapped and unable to get out of her bad relationship. It is in black and white because its a flashback to the lead up of their breakup, the black and white makes it more striking.

This is one of my favourite shots of the whole production; its our ending shot and I like it so much because it shows the relationship between us, this was a blooper shot of us laughing and I think its a good shot to end our video on, as its as if we are coming out of the acting and the video into reality.
This is the smashing of the glass shot, this was effective and makes an impact. It falls in a moment with the music, and then rewinds to complete the effect.

This is a shot we all liked, it showed a fight between the two of them but in a different way to how we had before and it felt original so this is why I like it.

I chose this shot because Laura is framed well by the branches and the surroundings.

This shot shows the transition between shots. It was a fade and shows entering the whole music video.

I included this shot of me as this is when the wind blows, we all thought it was effective and was pure luck that we filmed as this particular point.

Editing (26/11/10)

Even though we couldnt edit what we wanted to, we used the following two hour to do, more editing the smashing glass sequence. We speed the timing up and let it fall in correct play and then once it had smashed we copied it and put a reverse so it came back up and made it look like all the peices were being put together.

We also looked over the flashback shots and made them more in sync. We got rid of a shot that we felt just was getting in the way and didnt add anything to it.

What went wrong

Today when it came to uploading out footage we discovered that what we had filmed the provious day was not there, the tape had been faulty and this meant that none of our footage was clear enough to use. We plan to refilm again on the 30th.

Filming (25/11/10)

To day we filmed at my house again.
After our first cut, we decided the reverse seen we had in the bridge of the song didn't really seem to fit. So we came up with the idea to change this, the idea we came up with was to film Emily and Joe sitting at my dinning room table and slowly moving apart showing the transition from everything being OK between them to how things ended up due to his cheating and lying. We thought of the idea from Citizen Kane, as there is a seen where it is clear they are drifting apart.

We would also have close up shots of us as the gap gets bigger in between Emily and Joe.
We also needed to film Jodie's last two lines as we needed it in the version.

We decided that the girls and I would be in plain white tops and just have a shot of our faces with no singing as the "miss missing" lyric fitted better and had purpose on Emily and Joe's bit as they were drifting apart.

We also needed to film the closing line so that involved Laura, Charlotte and Jodie, they over lap each other so we needed to make sure we set the frame up so we could do this in editing.

We planned a story board for this:

Problems?

Today everything worked well, we did have to have all the lights on when it was daylight outside as the lighting isn't that good in my house, but once we did this there wasn't a problem. We managed to sort it and get on with filming. Apart from this we had no other problems and we were relieved to think we might have possibly finished filming!!!

Rough cut and feedback

Analysis of shot

The shot I am analysing is charlottes shot. I chose this one because it shows the distance she is feeling between her and the bf. As she stares out of window it shows she is thinking about something which is making her distant to everything else.

Editing 3/11/10

Today we continued the editing, as we desperately needed this time to just finish the few last bits before our first cut.

We needed to put together the last chorus, and make sure the lip- syncing was all correct and we had to put the two flashbacks in the last chorus into black and white but changing the saturation.

Although we didn't have time to do everything this was enough to show everyone, we want to include the remaining flashbacks and and sort out the bridge to get to the best finishing point.

We needed to increase the speed of the lip-syncing to make it fit perfectly, we did this using the speed feature.

We were at the point where it was good enough to show everyone and we knew we had things we wanted to add, however we ran out of time to do them and we decided not to show something that had something in it that was half finished so we just showed it with everything done that we could.

Plan after email for 3/11/10

After this we decided we would have to edited as best as we could and this would mean all of us working hard to make sure we get what we can done!!

Extention of deadline email and response

This was an Email we decided to send because we needed more time editing, we felt if we didnt have this time then our production didnt fit together.

And this was the response that we got:

Permission Letter

Before the project began, we were advised to write a letter to the Copyright holder of the song 'Missing You' to ask permission to use it. Here is a copy of that letter:

Dear Copyright Holder,

For our current A-Level Media Studies Advanced Portfolio we are producing our own music videos; this will consist of us performing the song, and editing it on a software programme that our school provides us with. As a group, we decided on a girl-group theme and the song we decided to chose was ‘Missing You’ (The Saturdays). We are writing to seek your permission to use this song in our video.

To briefly explain a little bit more about our production, we would be creating a video which is then supported with a digipak and a magazine advertisement. We hope to demonstrate our skills of storyboarding, camera-work and editing. Also, we would just like to make very clear that the use of this song is only for educational purposes, and would not be exploited in any other way (such as to a large audience or websites).

Throughout the whole process of this task, the artist that originally sung the track will be recognised and we would not try to pass off the product as our own in any way. Our examining body is OCR, and they will be more than happy to clarify that this is a legitimate educational task. If you would like to send us a copyright notice to feature in our coursework, we would happily oblige with your requirements; if this is the case, please send the information to the address listed above.

We’d like to thank you for taking the time to read this, and look forward to hearing from you.

Your Sincerely,

Laura Pinkney, Charlotte Andreas, Sophie Legge and Jodie Butcher.

We did not expect a reply and have not recieved one so far; as we did not hear of any objections we continued on to use the song in our production.

Editing Day 5 - 27/10/10

On this day myself, Laura and Jodie came into school during half term.

We met at 10.30 and got to work straight away. We were aiming to complete our video within the time we had (we were told we had to leave school by 2.30)we wanted more time but we couldn't do anything to change this. So we didn't manage to finish our final cut on this shot.

However throughout the day we managed too:

1) Finish the first verse, first chorus, second verse and second chorus as best as we could in the time limit

2) Put together a very rough draft of the anti-climax section of the song (reverse shot)

Editing:

When it came to complete our editing most of the first verse was already done. so we added in a reaction shot of Joe, we slowed this down to give the effect we wanted and it works well with the music.

After this we moved on to the first chourus we edited out bits we didnt want by using the cutting tools. to check it was all to time and fitted well with everything we do we play it back a couple of times and say if we think its slightly out and what we need to do to change it to make it fit better. We do this all on the reel.
Something we had a problem with was Jodie's lip syncing, it looks like she was singing too slow for the song, so we
