Editing Day 3 & 4

Today I decided we should go through everything we had on the editing reel and cut out what we know we dont need to try and make it easier to go through when it comes down to more editing.
So today was us trying to get more organised for serious editing time for friday (22/10/10) and over half term (week starting 25/10/10).

Also on top of this we captured what we filmed on monday (18/10/10), as it was capturing we were watching it and saying what we could get rid of from this, and then after it was captured we did cut out the things we didnt need.

Editing to continue on Friday.

On Friday we continuted our progress with the editing. Using parts of what we had captured and bit of filming that were already on our reel with carried on through the song. We then had to think about:

1. The shots were too long. We found that a lot of the shots of Emily were too long, and although the tone of the song is slow and sad we felt that this bit needed to be sharper to make it more dramatic. We did this by deciding against using continous shots that flowed to using jump cuts. Ordinarily, we would not use this type of shot when editing, but we found that it worked in making the flow move quicker; we felt it did not look odd because the footage itself is of Emily moving out of her house dramatically.

2. Corresponding the two cameras together. The footage we edited today was shot from two seperate cameras, this was mainly so we could film the talking scenes as one whole thing as opposed to us doing shot-reverse-shot with one camera where we would have to get the actors to repeat their lines more than once. We at first found it difficult to work with the two reels of footage on the editing line, but Jodie suggested that instead we dragged the footage from camera 2 to the split screen and simply pull the footage down from there. This worked well as it allowed us to work with camera 1 on the main line and just add the additonal footage as and when we needed it.

3. Deciding the length of the flashbacks. In the first verse, we put shots of Emily putting the case into her car and driving off. At first we were unsure whether to try a continous flow like originally planned or stick to the jump cuts. We analysed the situation, and felt that due to the fact we only wanted short shots it would look most effective to do the jump cuts. It took us a good 10 minutes manipulating the footage to get it to the perfect length, and we asked our teacher once or twice on her opinion as to whether certain shots (such as the one of Emily from inside the car) was too long. She preffered the quick style editing, so we adjusted it to this length.

After we did all of this, we had to think about what

How I've felt the filming has gone over all

Over I would say the filming we have done (so far?) has been successful, we have got all the shots we wanted and more as we have experimented and filmed things we have thought of on the spot incase we need more. We have had a fun doing it and although worrying about getting it all together we have been able to do things smoothly and worked well as a team.

Plan now filming is done (possibly until after first cut)

Our plan now all our filming is done for the moment is to keep editing every time we can. We have four hours we can film this week (week starting 18/10/10). This should give us plenty of time to get as much done as group before showing our first cut the week after half term.

In half term we will come in and do more editing if needed, but will do anyway just to check everything is done as best we can, I think we will need half term to edit everything.

It also now gives us time to think about are next tasks and get ideas to do this!
I am excited to see how the first cut comes out and I feel we have done all we can and our ideas are good and will work well!

Script used in Day 6 Filming

Emily leaves the house and walks out of the door to walk down the steps, then:

Joe: Emily! Wait!

He grabs her shoulder, she turns slightly.

Emily: Get off me Joe, I'm leaving you!

She isnt interested he grabs her shoulder

Joe: But I don't understand, what have I done?!

Emily: You know what you did!

This is where are flash backs come in (with us four girls)

Emily: *sighs*

SONG STARTS.

Editing Day 2 (15/10/10)

Today, we used our 2 hour lesson to do more editing.

Firstly, we went through the footage with the razor tool and tried to cut out any footage that we knew that we wasn't going to be using (again).
We did not do this specifically, as we didn't want to cut things out which we may find we needed at a later stage.
We decided it was time to start fitting some of the lyrics with the lip syncing. We dragged the song onto the audio line and then found the first shot we needed (which was Frakie so Charlottes clips were needed, so we brought all of these to the front of our editing line).
Once we found this, we cut it down with the razor and dragged it to the beginning of the time-line where the music starts. We were able to match this well and it didnt take us too long.

For the next part of the song we chose to use the nature shots,I had suggested a spinning technique for a shot. I took the camera free hand and recorded it whilst spinning round, despite getting dizzy when i played it back it looked how i wanted it too.
Then, we had a close up shot of Charlotte singing the second line. After this we then cut another section, which was shots we didnt mean to film it was just because we left the camera on. The shot worked well because it had a similiar 'nature' feel to the tree shot, we put a reverse edit on this so it was movement going outwards.

We then continued with Charlottes verse, we made sure it wasnt all signing and we wanted to make short but sweet edits. We had to go through all the different attempts we had at filming and this took us some time but we had to get the best for our video.

We then decided to continue with the verse as far as we could going on the time limit.

Editing Day 1 (13/10/10)

In our first day of editing we had already got everything captured that we had filmed so far, so we started going through what we had filmed.
We the decided to start at the beginning of the video and work through it like that, so this was our plan.

At this point in time we didn't have Emily and Joe's filming yet from the beginning so we uploaded this.

Editing:

1. Firstly, we seperated the footage of that particular section from the rest on the timeline so we were able to look more closely at it.

2. Next, we then started by roughly cutting out shots that were no use (these included shots that didn't work and bloopers). This made it easy to look and begin editing. We started off from the beginning of the song, which were the flashback we were all involved it at Bigs House.

3. After many attempts of reducing the lengths of each shot, we managed to perfectly time them to the timing that we had originally wanted (approximatley one second each).

5. Then, using the effects tool we highligted our footage and dragged the black & white effect onto it, so that our footage would now appear this way (as we want our flashbacks to be in black and white).

6. We then had an idea about adding a white dip between every shot for a dramatic effect. We played around with how long we thought it should last, but in the end we decided as a group that it had more of an impact when it was extremely short and snappy.

We were happy with what we had produced and set us up with excitiment for how the rest of the video could go and look! We also found editing was fine once we got going, we rememebered how to use the different buttons.

Bring on the rest of the editing!

Filming Day 6 (My House- Emily and Joe)

Today we were filming Emily and Joe's flashbacks;

For this filming day we came up with the idea of using two camera, we hoped this would add to using techniques, cut filming time and make match on action work better and filming at a different angle.

although it wasnt this simple:
It worked well, the only difficulty was positioning it so that the other camera was not in shot. It often took us a while to make sure that the framing of both shots was ok, and that no other camera could be seen.
We will not know how successfully this idea will be until we begin editing this particular section, hopefuly it will look proffesional then us simply re-enacting the same scene twice but from different angles.

Flashback Shots

To explain the flashbacks its easier through pictures:

Overall?

Today I felt the filming went okay.
We all know we are under time-pressured as we are all keen to make the first-cut deadline after half term. I hope it doesnt show in the shots and I dont think it will because we have filmed everything we wanted too

My Favourite shot of the day:

(picture)

Day 5 Filming (My House)

Date: 8th October 2010

Location: My House

Today we wanted to get certain things done;

1. To film the last chorus shots, which meant individual shots of the chorus as well as group ones.

2. To get extreme close ups of things such as our feet with our different coloured shoes,

3. To get 'action shots' of us all laughing and walking around the house (no lip synching required).

I feel we acheived this, this was a refief to all of us because we had two attempts before and now those little bits were all done.

There werent any major problems, we didnt have a long time to film, so there was an element of rushing around but this didnt mean we didnt film anything and now all we had to do was film Emily and Joe's bits on day 6 of filming.

Missing You- The Saturdays

Me

I miss missing you
I miss missing you

Where's the pain when you walk out the door
It doesn't hurt like it used to before
Where's the love that we couldn't ignore
It doesn't kick like a pill anymore
Where's the thrill at the end of our fights
Where's the heat when we turn off the lights

I just miss all the miss that we made
When we still have the passion to hate

I miss missing you, sometimes
I miss hurting you 'til you cry
I miss watching you as you try
Try not to end up in tears
Begging to get back together
I just want you to be
To be stuck in a second forever
So don't freak out and believe.

Sometimes I'm just missing
Missing You
I miss missing you

There’s a dark cloud pulling me in
That’s the girl I was breathing in sin
There’s a blind force letting it win
And it’s longing to tear us apart
I get high when you’re making me weak
Let me down ’til I crawl on my knee’s

I just miss all the mess that we made
When we still have the passion to hate

I miss missing you sometimes
I miss hurting you ’til you cry
I miss watching you as you try
Try not to end up in tear’s
Begging to get back together
I just want you to be
To be stuck in this second forever
So don’t freak out if I leave

Sometimes I’m just missing, missing you
I miss missing you

Miss missing, miss missing, miss missing
I wanna crush in your arms at the other side of the world
Miss missing, miss missing, miss missing
I wanna die for you ’cause love is only true if it hurts

I miss missing you sometimes
I miss hurting you ’til you cry
I miss watching you as you try
Try not to end up in tear’s (ooh)
Begging to get back together (together)
I just want you to be (want you to be, yeah)
To be stuck in this second forever
So don’t freak out if I leave

Sometimes I’m just missing (I’m missing)
Missing you (no, missing you)
I miss missing you

Ideas for Editing based on last years projects and learning

These were tasks we did last year and we suddenly thought this could help us use our skills to the best of our ability because we know how to use different techniques.

Ahead of day 5 filming (filiming tomorrow 8/10/10)

We had all planned to meet up but sadly our actor cancelled on us last minute. This was frustrating because we had a schedule we wanted to stick to and we only had one day left to film in the next week as one of us was going away over half term.

New "barn house" idea

We had come up with a new direction:

We have decided that a change of location is needed so we are now using my house. Everyone agreed my house would be suitable cause lighting would be better and more space to do different shots and we could come back whenever, although we want to get it done as soon as possible.

So at my house we needed to film seperate group shots of the chourus and other lil snippit bits to fill up the song and add dimention. Also we had the idea of emily driving away from the house and this works well with how my drive is set out as its on its own and big to film and get a car driving on it.

We need to make sure that we have a working camera and full battery so we dont waste any time as this is the third time we are trying to film the same bits.

Fourth Day (Barn house take 2)

We arrived back at the Barn House fillm and get it all done.

We thought we had a problem with the camera again but didnt and we learned more about the camera through this. We ended up calling school and it was because of the setting that was on the camera so we changed this and the screen looked less dull and ok to film.

We filmed majority of it (however this was hard as no blank walls and lighting was difficult due to bright big windows or sudden no light) after looking at them I voiced that i thought it just didnt look right, it was dark due to lack of light, the decore didnt look like a younge couples and there was always something out of place.

The camera went dead, we then had a group discussion and decided the shots we had done we werent that happy with and it would be difficult to come back to this barn house again as they were going away and they were having to leave when we were there anyway so we felt like we were intruding.

So i put forward the idea of using my house, however it is not what you would call a barn house but it is in that sort of style and we have the space and blank walls so we can frame the shots a bit better and we can use my house whenever.

Third Day Filming (Barn House)

Date: 3rd October 2010

Location: Laura's Aunties Barn House

We met at Laura's aunties barn house at 11 in the morning.
We had Emily and Joe with us to film the flashback scenes as well as the last chorus with all of us.

As we were setting up, we soon realised that there was problem with the camera. It was rejecting our tape, and at first we assumed this wasn't a fault of the camera merely a bad tape. So Joe and Charlotte left to go and get another tape, when they came back, we found that the camera also rejected this tape! We decided that it was a problem with the camera, we had no choice but to abandon filming as it was a Sunday and there was no way we could have got another camera from school as it was shut.

Although, we did manage to to use our time by taking location shots and pictures of where the flashbacks could take place.

Our new plan of action is this:

1. We are going film footage on 2 seperate filming days, because there is now not a time on the weekend where we can all be together for filming due to people having prior engagements.

2. The first set of filming will just be the group the scene, and we will film this hopefully on wednesday morning. Joe and Emily will not be there for the flashback scene as it is during school time.

3. The week after we will then shoot the flashback scene, and this will be the last scenes we will shoot.

Second Day Filming (Bigz House)

28/9/10

Today's filming was to film our short little cuts at the beginning. We expect each shot to be a couple of seconds so a very small part of our production.

Me - First of all we filmed my shots with Joe, this was a scene of him giving me a ring (not engagement). The shots we came out with worked well, and to help us act it well Joe was being jokey and saying random things as a sort of script for me to follow on to. Although there wont be any sound so you wont be able to here any of this.

Laura - Laura's shot is her and Joe drinking some wine (fruit juice in our case), they were clicking their glasses together as if they were celebrating. It looked very effective once we had the shot we wanted.

Jodie - Jodie's shot with Joe was meant to be a casual everyday look, she was looking into a mirror (mirror being looking into the camera but pretending it was a mirror) and him hugging her from behind. They were laughing with embarrassment but at the end we decided this looked ok and natural and we wouldnt here the laughing from us or them in the final cut so it didnt matter.

Charlotte - Charlottes shot with her boyfriend Joe was a kiss, it took us a while to place them so we got a blank background but we eventually did it. It took a few goes but the last shot worked out well and it looked good and natural.

Overall I feel that the filming went well, we forget that this is only going to be a few seconds of filming but this made it no less important to get it right. We did our best to create the right look and I feel we have done this.

First Day filming (Epping Forest)

Our first location was Epping Forest near Chingford Plains.
Before we all met we had agreed we would style ourselves and do all our own hair and make-up. So I got up and did this, I had chosen to wear leggings, ugg boots, white vest top and a blue baggy cropped jumper. For my hair and make-up I didnt want to go to bold and "done up" because we were filming in a forest and we were looking quite casual with each other, so my hair was straight and down and my make-up was natural with a hint of eye shadow. For us all to be different would go with The Saturdays look because they don't ever wear the same thing, they might wear similar colours or design but something will always make them look set apart form each other so they all stand out individually.

We started filming at 1030 am.
Our plan when we got there was to walk and see what shots worked well and what was most appealing to us. To some this might not seem like a good idea but for us it suited us cause we knew what we wanted to see in our video but because three of us hadn't been there and I hadn't been there for some years its hard to say where and what we can film (apart from trees of course).
We had a camera to take photos for our blog and speakers and iPod so we could hear the music to help us with the lyrics.

The first person to film was Laura (Singing Vanessa's parts). We were filming separately so we could keep an eye on what shots we had got and what shots we then needed to get.
For Laura's shots, we were around a tree that had fallen over and had other branches surrounding it, it looked very effective.

To start with Laura walked through the tree to give us shots that could be used at other parts in the video. Then it came down to the lyrics, for this we filmed Laura singing the same thing from different angles so we could edit later and vary the shots we used, some of these shots were low angle shots and full body and close up. Her lip syncing was spot on and this is something we have all had practise with before. In Laura's shot we didn't need any props she just used the tress and this worked effectively. Laura then filmed the chorus so this could be edited into the main chorus.

In the same shot because we liked the way it looked so much we decided to film the first chorus. We all managed to position ourselves on the tree and it looked really good once we got it right. We did have a few slip ups literally as Jodie lost her footing and I forgot the lyrics. But overall it worked really well and didn't take us that long to do and our progress was going really well.

Next to film was Charlotte (Singing Frankie's part). She had the most to film, on our hunt to find places to shot we came across a long gravel path. We managed to frame her perfectly in the shot between two trees in the background. To start with we got the first lyrics in with just her mouth, this looked effective and focused on the lyrics rather than anything else and was different from what we had filmed before. Then we carried on filming the rest of her verse, we had four or so attempts to do this, this was because we were trying to zoom in while she was lip syncing (which again was fine, no problems with timing or anything), but the camera kept jilting or blurring and didn't seem to work, however we tried it one more time and it managed to work and not only this we got a gust of wind which blew Charlotte's hair which looked like a wind machine had done it so the timing was impeccable. The only problem we had with filming here was that it was a well used path so many people were walking along the path and we had to keep stopping and starting the filming, but it didn't take to long, it just gave us more time to think about what we were going to do next. She also sang the chorus up against one of the trees that has been in the background of her shot before.

Next to film was me (singing the part of Mollie), for this we took a walk back into the forest and came across a secluded area with a tree stump. I decided to sit on it and see how the shot looked, the girls said they liked it and it was framed well so we went with that. It did move but I managed not to fall off. Again we filmed my verse from two different angles so we could edit and make it look different and exciting. Then we filmed the chorus again from a different angle and then with me standing up and walking forward in the same area, I thought this would be hard but it wasn't and i managed it OK. My lip syncing was fine and had no problems, I didn't blank on some lyrics but this was because of nerves more than anything but the girls sang with me so this helped me along.

Last but not least to film was Jodie (singing Rochelle's part), we then took an other walk and ended up coming across a tree with low swooping branches. The idea we came up with was that Jodie was to walk along holding on to the tree and using it as an other natural prop. Jodie was lacking in confidence the same as me so we all sang with her and got it done. The shot look different to all of ours even though still being in the same forest, behind her you could see the plains behind her. Her lip syncing was fine as well and wasn't a problem for any of us and this helped save time. Jodie also filmed the chorus her so this could also be edited in the main chorus with us all too.

Then at the end we decided to move on to Chingford plains and to add something different we added some coreography to the video, nothing to complicated just enough to be interesting, stuff like walking forward and back and hand movements.
I feel over all this day of filming went well we all sang and acting our parts well. We got all the shots we wanted.

Flashbacks

In our video we are going to add flashbacks, with is to portray how Emily and Joe's relationship is disfunctional. We want to show that they don't work together anymore and they have lost their bond.

For me a video that stuck out the most for this would be "If I Were A Boy" by Beyonce. Even though they sort of work out their troubles (our actors arent) they still have moment throughout the video which shows what we are aiming for.

In the picture above it might be difficult to see here but she is so expressionless conpared to him, he is joking around and cooking her breakfast and she just seems to uninterested and this is something we want to acheive in our video, there isnt passion between them anymore and this comes across strongly. She doesnt even sit down to talk to him and eat her food.

In this shot we can see they are at a party but not together and the distance between them shows that there are clearly things wrong in their relationship.

Also the video is in black and white and this is what we intend to edit are shots to, so there is a difference from the flashbacks to the rest of the video.

Anamatic Feedback

From our anamatic the feedback we got was that we had a structure and you could see what we wanted for our video, however we know that because we were having so many different shots it was quite complicated but in our heads we still knew what look and feel we wanted from our video and this still came across in the anamatic.

Equipment And Prop List

In one of the lessons before we started filming the four of u sat down and made a list of what props and costumes we would need for each section of the music video.

1) Our first filming section was in Epping Forest, this is where most of the lip syncing is being done and as we were outside we decided to chose our own outfits individually on the basis we want to look stylish but still so we won't want to look cold if we are outside so we must dress for this as it might look out of place.

When we spoke about it the general outcome of our outfit plans were things such as jeans, ugg boots, coats, jumpers and leggings

(pictures)

2) Our second section of filming will be at Bigz house (my boyfriend). As the filming in this house is meant to be a seen where the cheating boyfriend (Joe-four different outfits as we need to show that he is at four different girls houses not just in one and on four separate occasion) is with his four other girls he is seeing behind his girlfriends back (Emily-not actually in this shot), we wanted the outfits to look casual and the props to be things that would generally happen around the house and between a couple.
So we would all be in things like leggings and casual tops/jumpers, but we all had different props (ring, wine glasses, mirror).

(pictures)

3) Our third filming section is at a barn house, for this we wanted to incorporate each of us wearing a separate colour. So the costume list for this section was black dress, flesh tights and different coloured heels. We want the coloured heels to be bright so they stand out easily otherwise it ruins the point.
When Emily and Joe come they will be in fashionable but casual clothes so still going with the same feel the video generally has.

(pictures)

Now to be able to shoot and film all of this we must make sure at every shoot we have:
  • Video Camera
  • Tape
  • Tripod
  • Our story board (so we know what shots we have to do and what we are looking for to frame in our shot)
  • Camera (to take photos to put on blog and keep in case we need for ancillary tasks)

Extra Props needed:

  • Swarovski ring (for flashback shot)
  • Wine glasses (for flash back shit, filled with Rose coloured juice not real wine!!)
  • Hair brush and mirror (for flashback)
  • Cars (for driving away dramatic seen)
  • Our clothes (including organising the actors outfits)
  • Bright coloured heels
  • And whatever we can use in the house to frame with or what looks good at the time.

Production Plan

Our style vs. The Saturdays

We want to portray the same girl group vibe that The Saturdays do with their fashion. They manage to look stylish without too much fuss and this is good for us to try and imitate. We know from reading in magazines that they favour high street bands and being fashion role models.

(picture)

The iconic look from The Saturdays is that each Saturday has a different colour. We plan to take this idea and apply it to us, at this point in time we are not sure if it will be in dresses or shoes. They use bright and colourful.

(pictures)

ALBUM COVERS
The Saturdays album covers are also bright, colourful and fun to look up. b

The Saturdays as well as being fun and casual also have a glamorous side. They dont always follow their seperate colours and they can all dress in various different outfits such as glamorous dress with heels. They give them a sexy image and tasteful at the same time and this is what we want to show as well.

(picture)

Generally, The Saturdays keep their classy image throughout their work and outside of this. We can see this again through other medias other than their videos and website, but also in magazines. They are casual yet still manage somehow to look glamorous, and we hope to acheive this look to for the flashbacks in our music video.
